Pregnancy can be a pain in the back… and pelvis, buttocks and legs.

As a new mum, you’re doing everything you can to support the growth and development of your baby. And you’re doing a great job at it; they’re growing! But this can be hard on your back and pelvis… but you’re not going through this alone, studies have shown that 50% of pregnant women complain of low back pain during pregnancy, most of this occurring beyond 20 weeks.

At Evolving Chiropractic we see many pregnant women as patients and we’re passionate about ensuring that the pregnant ladies of Mount Evelyn, Mooroolbark, Lilydale, Wandin, Montrose and the Yarra Valley have pain-free pregnancies. Chiropractic care during pregnancy can help ensure that your pelvis, sacrum, mid-back and low back move correctly, decreasing the pain you may feel during your pregnancy. As your body changes through the different stages of pregnancy, we are able to modify and adapt our techniques to accommodate your growing belly and increased flexibility of the connective tissues.

Often women just accept the low back pain, sciatica, symphysis pubis dysfunction and pelvic pain as they go through pregnancy, when often they don’t need to.

Typically, low back pain during pregnancy occurs where your low back meets your pelvis, at the sacro-iliac joints, causing sacro-iliac joint dysfunction or at the front of the pelvis at the symphysis pubis joint causing symphysis pubis dysfunction. This will mainly manifest as low back pain, pain down the legs (sciatica), buttock or gluteal pain, pain into the front of the hip or groin or even abdominal and pelvic pain.

Sacroiliac joint dysfunction generally refers to pain in the sacroiliac joint region that is caused by abnormal motion in the sacroiliac joint, either too much motion or too little motion. It typically results in inflammation of the sacroiliac joint, and can be debilitating.

Symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD) is a condition that causes excessive movement of the pubic symphysis, most commonly because of a misalignment of the pelvis.

This dysfunction of the lower back and pelvis may be caused by a number of issues: Weight gain, hormone changes, abdominal muscle separation, changes to your centre of gravity, postural changes, thoracic/mid-back immobility.
